What a cool challenge! Check out Becoming Naomi Leon or Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. They are children's books and they are equally enjoyable for adults.

Ch. 1 is online!
Good suggestions
Katrina,
Sorry, but I'm not sure how my non-Lat Am challenge reviews keep getting linked to this post (I'm not doing it on purpose--feel free to delete them!).
Here's a link to my first completed Latin American read, Malinche by Laura Esquivel:

Hi Katrina, my first review for the challenge is up here:

It wasn't a happy start, I'm afraid!
Katrina, my second book for your challenge was more like it! My review's at:

Thanks for hosting the challenge, which is now completed on my end! My last two novels, by José Emilio Pacheco and Roberto Bolaño, were very good and outstanding respectively: for details, see http://caravanaderecuerdos.blogspot.com/2009/04/las-batallas-en-el-desierto.html and http://caravanaderecuerdos.blogspot.com/2009/04/amuleto.html
